'Apologies Faf' – Matthew Wade regrets after unintentionally distracting Faf du Plessis while batting

Hobart Hurricanes skipper Matthew Wade has apologised to Perth Scorchers batter Faf du Plessis for his cheeky comment behind the stumps that disrupted du Plessis’ concentration. The incident happened when both sides locked horns during the BBL 2022 clash at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Monday, December 19.

Justifying his actions, Wade said that he had no idea about how early he had yelled ‘bowled’ which ended up annoying Faf as his valiant knock was cut short in a bizarre manner.

“I think he was disappointed. I called ‘bowled’ maybe a little bit early. I don’t know how early it was, but I think that’s why he was annoyed… apologies Faf,” Wade said while speaking to Channel 7.

Faf du Plessis looked in splendid touch opening the innings as he scored a quickfire 32 runs off 16 deliveries at an outstanding strike rate of exactly 200 and his knock included three fours and as many sixes.

However, the veteran Proteas batter’s wonderful cameo came to an abrupt end when he was bowled by left-arm spinner Patrick Dooley in the fourth over, but before heading back to the dugout, Faf had already added 44 runs along with Adam Lyth for the opening wicket.

As Faf attempted to heave the spinner through the off-side by making some room, Matthew Wade was heard saying “bowled” from behind the stumps. It resulted in a lapse in concentration for the batter and the ball eventually went on to disturb his timber.

As Wade went ahead to celebrate in ecstasy, Faf looked at him and felt like saying something to the keeper while he was walking back to the dugout. Nonetheless, no words were exchanged and the batter kept on walking.

Faf du Plessis’ wicket proved to be the turning point of the match as the Scorchers fell short by eight runs chasing 173 despite a blistering 37-ball 62 from wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis.
